The inspiration was my mother playing shadow puppet on the wall with me when I was five years old. She called the apparitions we created “Merkas.” I guess it’s Finnish for monsters but I thought the correct word in Finnish was Hirviö. In any case, I came to think of Merkas as shadowy creatures that lurk on the wall and watch you.
